A paper on the origin of scarlet crucian carp, designated as the Natural Monument of Japan, has been published
Scarlet crucian carp, locally called “Hibuna” has been found in several distant river in Hokkaido Island, Japan. Particularly famous is the Carassius population including Hibuna in Lake Harutori, which has been designated as a Natural Monument of Japan.
Mishina (SPDR) et al. showed that the Hibuna originated from hybridization between indigenous gynogenetic triploids and goldfish introduced about 100 years ago, in collaboration with Kyoto University, Kushiro City Museum, and Bihoro Museum.
