A paper on the regulation of spindle assembly in oocytes has been published.
The spindle, a molecular machine that segregates chromosomes, must be formed at a proper timing. Nishiyama (Junior research associate (JRA) / Graduate School of Biostudies Kyoto U) found a regulatory mechanism that ensures timely spindle assembly in oocytes.
Genes to Cells. 25(10): 685-694 (2020). doi: 10.1111/gtc.12803.

A paper on the mechanism for spindle assembly in oocytes has been published. The spindle is an apparatus that segregate chromosomes into the egg.
Yoshida et al revealed that a kinetochore-based mechanism promotes spindle assembly in oocytes.
Such a mechanism is less functional in humans compared to mice.
The findings are important for the understanding of chromosome errors in human eggs.
The project was jointly carried out with IVF Namba Clinic, Osaka City University, and Newcastle University.

Prc1-rich kinetochores are required for error-free acentrosomal spindle bipolarization during meiosis I in mouse oocytes.
